Aguas Frias is the name of a community that is 30 minutes away from the Telica`s crater, one of our famous hikes. The small community has 54 families, all living together as a team. It wasn’t the first time that Quetzaltrekkers helped this community, in 2009 we built a couple of latrines for the school.
One of the biggest needs of Aguas Frias was its school, a place for around 60 kids. The school had only one destroyed classroom where two teachers tried to teach six different grades, the floor was full of holes because of the leaks on the roof and the classroom was literally falling apart.
One of our philosophies is helping the communities where we hike, and Telica is one of our main hikes where we go at least twice a week. They urgently needed another classroom where the teachers could have their own space, and remodel the classroom that they already have.
It’s been a hard project, the hardest part has been transport all the materials to the top of the volcano. Flat tires, holes on the path, 4-wheel-drive breaking, it was a different challenge every day. We were lucky to have the full support of the community, they were working hard every day, helping transport the materials and organizing the rest of the parents. Without their effort it wouldn’t be possible to finish the classroom in two months. It was also really important for Quetzaltrekkers that the parents were involved, because it is a project for their kids and the future of Aguas Frias.
We finally finished the new classroom, and now it is time for the kids to move and leave the old building free to begin remodeling. That way kindergarten and primary will have a proper and dignified space. Also with the new structure the community can apply for a new teacher and include the first grades of secondary, since the kids have to go two hours far away now.
We still need to finish more, rebuild the old classroom, paint the new one, bring new chairs and tables and put all the details for the new school. But we are really proud to be in this stage of the project and to offer opportunity to the kids of Aguas Frias.
To celebrate this big success they had a small opening with mostly of the community, a morning to share and thank. The kids enjoyed two piñatas full of candies, everyone hit it and had a great time.
Aguas Frias is a small community with an awesome heart who take care of each other and consider themselves as brothers and sisters. Quetzaltrekkers is really proud to be able to help thanks to the profit of our hikes, and give a better future to the kids of this beautiful community.
