Celebrating Children`s Month

June is when Nicaragua celebrates Children’s Month. Many schools, neighborhoods and communities will be celebrating this month where parties are in preparation with surprises for children.

For years Nicaragua has been promoting the concept of the rights of children and today there are laws protecting children and their rights. But thousands of children in the country do not experience the full joys of childhood and the rights given to them and many of them do not have the benefit of an education passed grade five.

Las Chavaladas, one of the projects that we support monthly, organized a big event on Leon`s theater for all the kids in the city. Most of our projects, like Barriletes or Las Tias, were invite to participate in this day. The special surprise this year was that the kids didn’t have to prepare any performance, it was the responsibility of the adults make that day the best party for the children.

The projects and organization prepared different performances with one specific theme. The theme for this year was “The education that I want is…” In Nicaragua the schools often operate without the basic materials such as chairs, desks, blackboards, etc., sometimes for a child to get to school, he or she will have to walk for an hour or cross a river. These are the many difficulties a child must face in Nicaragua in order to obtain an education.

The children participated in a paint and poem contest with that same theme. Most of the kids wanted a clean school, several ones draw a full classroom with basic materials, other focus the poems in fight against bulling or abuse in the school. They spoke out because they want a better education.

The Quetzaltrekker`s volunteers helped painting faces before the event and we also donated to make the event possible. It is important for our children to make the most of their opportunities because, in the not too distant future, they will be the future of Nicaragua.
